What I’m Reading: Out There Screaming, edited by Jordan Peele

Synopsis: “A cop begins seeing huge, blinking eyes where the headlights of cars should be that tell him who to pull over. Two freedom riders take a bus ride that leaves them stranded on a lonely road in Alabama where several unsettling somethings await them. A young girl dives into the depths of the Earth in search of the demon that killed her parents. These are just a few of the worlds of Out There Screaming, Jordan Peele’s anthology of all-new horror stories by Black writers.”

My take: I was lucky enough to score an ARC of this anthology, and it’s fantastic. Riveting, fresh, and deeply imagined, it makes you think and feel, and it underscores the unique brand of terror that America creates. With stories from 19 masters of horror within the table of contents, it’s hard to pick favorites, but I love Lesley Nneka Arimah’s “Invasion of the Baby Snatchers,” “Wandering Devil,” by Cadwell Turnbull, and “Dark Home,” by Nnedi Okorafor. The anthology hits shelves October 3rd.
